Best EV Charger Cables UK 2026

Most home EV chargers come with a 5m tethered cable. If your charger-to-parking-spot distance is longer, or you travel to public chargers that are untethered, you need the right Type 2 cable. Get the wrong spec and you'll charge at half speed (or not at all).

Why it matters

Cable specs matter more than most buyers realise. A 16A cable limits you to ~3.7kW charging — half the speed of a proper 32A cable. And some cheap extensions reduce continuous current rating further.

How we chose

  • Current rating (32A vs 16A)
  • Cable length (5m is standard; 7.5m-10m for tricky driveways)
  • IP rating (IP54+ for outdoor reliability)
  • TUV or CE certification

Our picks

#1

#2

Type 2 to Type 2 EV Cable (32A, 10m)

#3

Type 2 Tethered Extension Cable (5m)

From
£120

Extends a tethered home charger if 5m isn't enough. Genuinely rare — most OZEV rules prohibit extension — check installer before use.

Best for: Edge cases; consult your charger's installer first.

#4

3-Pin 'Granny' Charger (UK Plug)

From
£250

Slow-charge from a regular 3-pin UK socket. 2.3kW = 8 miles/hour. Lifesaver for holidays, guests, or backup.

Best for: Keep one in the boot as emergency backup.

Our verdict

Type 2 32A 5m is the one cable every EV owner needs. Add a granny charger for travel. Skip long extensions unless unavoidable.
